What is privacy worth ? Alessandro

چکیده
We investigate individual privacy valuations in a series of experiments informed by theories from behavioral economics and decision research. We find evidence of order and endowment effects and nonnormal distributions of valuations. In particular, we find that individuals assign markedly different values to the privacy of their data depending on the order in which they consider different offers for that data, or whether they consider the amount of money they would accept to disclose otherwise private information, or the amount of money they would pay to protect otherwise public information. We find the gap between such values to be larger than what usually estimated in comparable studies of other private goods. In addition, we find evidence that privacy valuations are not normally or uniformly distributed, but Ushaped, and clustered around extreme, focal values. These results paint a more nuanced and detailed picture of privacy valuations than the one currently in the literature. They suggest that the value of privacy, while not entirely arbitrary, is highly malleable and sensitive to non-normative factors.

It is always a pleasure to read a new paper by Professor Anderson. There is always something new to learn. Especially in this case. Mobile payments are not my research focus. My research focus is the economics and behavior economics of privacy. When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. So, I will focus my remarks on the privacy angle in Professor Anderson’s arguments. First, however...
متن کاملPrivacy and Market Failures: Three Reasons for Concern, and Three Reasons for Hope
The opening panel at the University of Colorado—Boulder’s “Economics of Privacy” Conference was asked to tackle an important but perilous question: Is there a market failure for information privacy? The question is perilous, because the term “market failure” is unfortunately used, and misused, to refer to different things (from market outcomes that are not Pareto efficient, correctly; to, incor...

Privacy decision making can be surprising or even appear contradictory: we feel entitled to protection of information about ourselves that we do not control, yet willingly trade away the same information for small rewards; we worry about privacy invasions of little significance, yet overlook those that may cause significant damages. Dichotomies between attitudes and behaviors, inconsistencies i...
